A Free Tool to Safer Travel Abroad
Everyone desires to travel smarter and more safely. The U.S. State Department made safe, smart travel simple with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (or STEP).
The STEP Travel Program is a great way to keep up with security and safety issues in countries you visit.
1) It draws on the strength and reach of the State Department’s network of consulates and embassies all over the globe;
2) It’s free.
How to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Programme
Subscribe to STEP online by entering your full name, email address, and country of destination. You can sign up to receive email updates and alerts if you are currently on vacation.
- You can also download Smart Traveler from iTunes or Google Play and sign up for alerts.
- STEP works on a per trip basis. Each international trip that you take will require you to sign up.
The Smart Traveler Enrollment Programme: Reasons to Use
STEP can give you information about your destination before you go. Although you won’t be forced to cancel your trip because the State Department sent you a bulletin about security, it is a good idea to know more.
STEP can provide safety updates. When you travel, you probably don’t pay much attention to news headlines. It’s possible that you don’t know whether your destination is heading for violence, political unrest or natural disasters. STEP will alert you to these issues. What could be more convenient than receiving the most current travel information from the State Department?
STEP can assist with evacuation. STEP’s true value will be revealed when a crisis occurs. STEP will notify you of any pending natural disasters or emergencies in your area and provide information about evacuation plans for when disaster strikes. Registering for STEP also makes it easier to be found by the State Department and to get the help you need, up to and including evacuation. If you have any questions, STEP will make it easy to find the nearest U.S. consulate or embassy.
STEP makes it easy to reach you back home in case of an emergency. When you travel, there are two groups that you should be concerned about: you and your travelling companions and the people back home. STEP can help you return home quickly if disaster strikes, whether natural or not.
STEP makes it easy to contact the local consulate or embassy. STEP can assist you in any situation, even if you get lost in a new city.
Once you are on the road, you can experience the real-world benefits that the STEP trave program offers. Imagine you’re in Paris, and there is a protest planned for the day. This would shut down most of Paris. STEP alerts and you can adjust your plans for that day.
Imagine you are on a trip to Antarctica when you receive a message from your relative stating that they are very ill. STEP can help you find the closest consulate or embassy to arrange transport back home.
STEP’s ability to work with travel insurance is one of its greatest strengths. Take the example above. Consider the previous example.
